How to use this rubric
The trap in grading lab reports is rewarding the lab that worked — but a report can earn full marks on a failed experiment and lose them on a successful one. This rubric scores the reasoning and the reporting, not the outcome: a testable hypothesis, a procedure someone else could repeat, clean data, and a conclusion that actually follows from it. Tell students up front that a wrong result, honestly analyzed, beats a right result they cannot explain.
Why these criteria
Each row targets something the assignment is really teaching, with descriptors written to be observable rather than vague:
- Purpose & hypothesis
- Rewards a testable, reasoned prediction rather than a restated title.
- Methods / procedure
- Uses replicability as the objective standard for a good procedure.
- Data & results
- Checks for labeled, unit-bearing data reported separately from interpretation.
- Analysis & conclusion
- Distinguishes a conclusion that follows from the data from one that ignores it.
- Scientific communication
- Grades precision and appropriate voice instead of general 'neatness'.
How to adapt it
- For an inquiry lab, add a 'Variables & controls' row instead of folding them into 'Methods'.
- For lower grades, accept a labeled diagram in place of a formal data table at the top level.
- To emphasize reasoning, double the points for 'Analysis & conclusion'.
Frequently asked questions
- Should a student lose points if their experiment failed?
- No — not for the failure itself. This rubric grades whether the hypothesis was testable, the procedure was replicable, the data were recorded honestly, and the conclusion follows from what actually happened. A failed experiment that is analyzed well can score full marks; the 'Analysis & conclusion' row even rewards discussing sources of error.
- How is this different from a science fair rubric?
- A lab report rubric grades a written document for one experiment — purpose, methods, data, analysis, communication. The science fair version adds a display board and is pitched at younger grades. Use this for high-school and intro-college write-ups.
- How do I grade the data section objectively?
- Look for labeled tables or graphs with units, and for results reported separately from interpretation. The 'Data & results' row makes those the standard, so 'has a graph' is not automatically full credit — it has to be labeled, carry units, and stay free of interpretation.
- Can I weight reasoning more than format?
- Yes — double the points on 'Analysis & conclusion'. That signals you care more about whether the student can interpret results than about perfect formatting, which is usually the right emphasis for a lab report.
